Verified!!!

My AMCAS is verified!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Heck yeah! Lol. Sorry, but I was about to write an entry basically laying out my plans to drive the 30 minutes to the AAMC building in D.C. and disembowel whoever is letting my AMCAS application sit on their desk. But it looks like I won’t have to do that. I submitted my AMCAS app on the 23th of June and I was verified today, July 13th. Many people haven’t seen a verified AMCAS app, so if you want to see mine, DOWNLOAD LOAD IT HERE. I do plan on posting my final draft of my personal statement (its much different) but I’m going to save that for another entry.

Research at Hopkins has been flowing along nicely, but I still find myself on SDN or on Google doing wedding planning more than I’m in the lab. Discovering something new is fun and exciting, but everything else really really really sucks. It almost seems to take a naive patience to finally get good results. Anyway, research is still more fun here than at Cincinnati, but I’ve been itching to get some more shadowing in, so hopefully that works out.

I received a letter from Oakwood College saying that I needed a 1 credit Biology elective in order to be cleared for graduation. So I’m going to have to throw some stupid class in there.

I have to admit that being on a predominately white/asian campus such as Hopkins is a little unnerving. I don’t know if grad students and PhDs are just weird, but I walk down the hall and they don’t even look at me. I walk into another lab and they think I’m that person responsible for all the robberies lately (yeah, a bunch of wallets and purses have been getting stolen from the labs). I have to stay in the lab until 7 p.m. and the security guards ask to see my ID to get back in, while everyone else gets to go back in without problems. I’m not saying that it’s a rascist thing, I’m just saying that it is obviously odd to them too to see a 6’5 black guy, in shorts and a t-shirt in a prestigous research lab. I honestly don’t care though because I just want to get my money so I can pay for my secondary applications. I also need to pay off the engagement ring and get a digital camera; so those are my focuses for now. Now don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of really nice people that I’ve met here. Its not at all stuffy like I expected it to be. The post-doc and grad student I work directly with are cool and funny.

I got a chance to walk around with a JHU grad who just got accepted into Georgetown Med school and he was telling me how his freshman biology class was. Basically their main lecture has like 200 people in it and no one is really allowed to ask questions. Then during other sessions, the teacher’s assistants go over the material and answer any questions that the students have. They hardly have contact with their professors. Now at my little school, we can ask a lot of questions in class, we can pop in any time to the teacher’s office and we often are invited to the teacher’s house for Sabbath dinner. Although I slightly envy the vast endowment of JHU and all the resources they have, I truly feel like I’ve benefited from the one on one feel of my small school. Getting an LOR was no problem, because I knew the teachers well. For any high schoolers that may be reading this; carefully examine the size of the school that you are applying to. If you do well at any college you will get into medical school, so why not go to a school where you get more personal contact? Anyway, there goes my mini-dissertation.

At this point I’m just waiting until more secondaries come. I’ve cut down the list of medical schools I’m applying to even more because these are the schools that Brittany and I will most likely get in to together. They are:

University of Maryland
Howard University
Morehouse SOM
Meharry SOM
Loma Linda SOM
University of Cincinnati

Now what we are doing is really abnormal and not often advised, but we are sure that the Lord is leading us to either one of these schools, but probably Loma Linda, so we are just consolidating our resources and focusing on these schools. I’ve already sent off my LORs to UMD and once I get the other secondaries I’ll mail LORs to them too through Interfolio. Besides all this I’m just doing a lot of wedding planning so I’ll write again when something interesting happens.

P.S.- for now on, I’ll be posting this table at the end of my posts so that I and you all can keep track of whats going on.
