The Lord has really blessed me. I currently have 5 interview

The Lord has really blessed me. I currently have 5 interviews at medical schools!!! I know I don’t deserve any of this, so all I can do is thank God. Planning the interviews has been my primary goal for these past couple of weeks. As you can see below, my first interview is at Vanderbilt on the 26th of this month. I applied to stay with a student host, but I highly doubt that will happen. I will probably just stay at the house of a former Oakwood student who is at Meharry, and then drive over in the morning. To prepare for the Vanderbilt interview I plan on reading their website, and I have already scoured SDN’s Interview Feedback page and compiled a list of questions that they tend to ask. My fiancée and I plan on going to the mall sometime this week to find a shirt and tie I can wear with my suit. If any of you all meet me, you’ll realize that I would rather wear scrub pants and a t-shirt then nice clothes. So yeah, going to shop for a shirt and tie is a big step forward for me. I plan to get my fiancée to ask me the interview questions so I can have an idea of how I want to answer them. I got an e-mail from Vanderbilt the other day, basically telling me that I’ve been scheduled to meet with the Dean of Diversity like an hour before my actual interview. I guess they realized I was black, so they set that up. Hopefully it’s a good experience! You all already knew about the Maryland interview. Well, I knew that I didn’t have the funds to fly up to the MD/D.C. area twice, if Howard ended up giving me an interview, so while I was on the phone with the admissions folk at Maryland, I asked them if it would be ethical to call Howard, tell them about my interview at Maryland, as ask if they could offer me one while I’ll be up there. They said it was completely fine, and so I e-mailed Howard this e-mail: Hello Ms. Walker. My name is DoctaJay (AAMC# XXXXXXXX), and I received an e-mail saying that I was complete. I’ve received an interview invitation from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine, for October 4, or possibly October 2. I go to school in Alabama, and I really only have enough money to fly once to the Maryland/DC area. I was wondering (if HUCOM decides to grant me an interview at all) if it would possible to schedule my interview around the same time that I will be at my Maryland interview. This will decrease the amount of class I miss and incurred costs of plane tickets. I know you are very busy, and I want to thank you for reading this e-mail. Well it worked out that Howard thought that was fine, so they scheduled me in for October 3rd for an interview. So my Maryland interview is on 10/2, and my Howard interview is on 10/3. That means that I can fly home the Friday before and fly out after the Howard interview! Praise the Lord for a little vacation in the middle of school.

Once I fly back from the Howard interview on the morning of the 4th of October, I have to gear up that Thursday night to drive to Atlanta, for my interview at Morehouse on the 6th. I guess I’ll drive back from there that weekend, and then on October the 12th, the Dean of Admissions at Loma Linda is coming to Oakwood to give interviews, so I have to gear up for that one too. I’m appreciating being busy rather than not, but I can see how this whole process can really throw you off track in your classes.

So, now I’m waiting for an interview invite from Cincinnati and Meharry. I know I said before that if I was accepted into Vanderbilt, that I wouldn’t go to the interview at Meharry, if I received an invite, but I’ve realized the error of my ways. I have similar stats to a girl I know that got a FULL SCHOLARSHIP at Meharry, so it would be stupid to miss a chance at a full scholarship.

Classes are going fine, and so is wedding planning, but it is really hard to balance everything, especially with the onset of senioritis. But I know everything will work out.
