So yesterday I took my Surgery Mock Board, marking the end of my 12 weeks of surgery. I am actually quite sad to see it over because now that means I won’t get to be in the OR for quite some time. But overall I really appreciated my time there. During the 12 weeks I was able to adequately determine that I didn’t want to do general surgery, and I was also able to see that the fields of neurosurgery and urology didn’t fit my style either. I am so happy that I actually enjoy orthopaedics, including the clinic or I would be quite confused as to what field I want to go into now.
Next week we start are 2 week junior elective and of course I chose to do it in orthopaedics. The first week I will be with Dr. WWW, who is the program director and the second week I will be with Dr. J who is the past-chair. This could possibly be the only time that they could really get to know me so I really want to impress them and work hard. I basically plan to read up on everything possible dealing with the hand and arm this weekend. The arsenal of books I have are:
1. Hoppenfields Surgical Approaches which basically walks you through step by step what you will see during an operation
2. Koval’s Handbook of Fractures- tells you what type of fracture you are dealing with and now to fix it. Absolutely priceless when it comes to being on call in ortho
3. Ortho Secrets- Question and answer book that should hopefully help me to beef up my ortho knowledge
4. Netters for Ortho- essential anatomy book that focuses on orthopaedics.
So that’s what I will be preparing to read this weekend in addition to spending time with the wife.
