I think that I am slowly realizing why pediatrics is so painful for me. I honestly don’t like internal medicine at all, and believe it or not pediatrics is more slow than internal medicine is. I really don’t like rounding all day and I hate the monotony of day to day inpatient pediatrics. I want to be in the OR or in clinic.
The thing I hate the most about my personality is that its really hard for me to act interested when I really hate what I am doing. I think that faking it is an important skill to have as a medical student and I feel lacking in that department. I cant wait for these last two weeks to be over. Family medicine had to be better than this.

I’m an M3 here in Chicago and found your blog back when I was debating between pediatrics and orthopedics (I’ve since decided on pediatrics). Just writing to say I’ve found that last two comments pretty amusing. I loved pediatrics and am actually really enjoying my gen surg rotation as well. I liked pediatrics because of the variety and just the fact that it was kids, but I like how surgeons work – make a decision, do something, don’t sit around and talk about it all day. Anyways, if you think pediatric rounds are bad, try neurology – I think I’d rather watch paint dry. However, I think the way rounds are structured can really change the way pediatrics, or any rotation for that matter, comes across; at our hospital we did work rounds where we sat around a table and ran the list: 1-2 hours and we would cover a good 30+ patients. Glad God’s got you go into ortho though. I had a really hard time deciding mainly because I feel like ortho is just about the best thing you can go into if you’re at all considering missions. Hang in there; 2 more weeks and you’ll never have to deal with rounds like this again!

Hey Scott I definitely agree. Today we actually had sit down rounds because we had like 6 new H&Ps to present and although it was a little painful, at least my legs weren’t about to fall out from under me. I’m glad that you found your love…my mom is a pediatrician so I’m used to seeing it, I’m just so surprised that the inpatient aspect is so unappealing to me. I must admit though that I really did enjoy peds clinic; the kids were usually quite healthy, the parents were usually nice, and the day went quickly. Inpatient peds is just crazy, lol. While I definitely think that ortho is great for missions, don’t think that you can’t do amazing work too as a pediatrician. We need everyone out there showing God’s love through medicine.
