Tests are Over!!!

Its the Sabbath today and I am very much enjoying my rest after a grueling week of tests. The picture below contains the schedule of what they put us through:testsched.png

Test week to me is always a huge juggling act. You really want to study hard and do well on every test, but at least for me, there is always one test that seems to get less attention. The first tests of the week on Monday were Anatomy and Embryology and I must say that the Lord really blessed me and opened up my mind on that day. Also, I was so happy that I had looked at the Anatomy questions on the UMich site, because the first 5 questions came from there…verbatim. The Cell (histology) and Neuroscience tests were both quite doable but challenging. I’m realizing that I really just “get” neuroscience, which is a blessing because it frees up some time to try and understand stuff in the other classes. On Wednesday, we had our Histology Practical FINAL. In my last post I showed you all the work I was putting into being ready for this thing because Histology really isn’t my forte. I’m happy to report that after studying for this thing like a madman (including 7 hours straight of looking at microscope slides) that I didn’t fail the practical. I don’t know my exact grade yet, but from the way I felt after the practical, I’m confident that I passed. This means that I never have to do histology again, which is a prayer I was desperately hoping would get answered. On Thursday, we had our Physiology/Biochemistry test. They combined everything into a 106 question test. This was by far the largest test we have ever taken and I am so glad it is over. By this point, your grade in physiology is pretty much set…either you are in the A range, the B range, the C range, or border line failing. On Friday, we had our Behavioral Science and Patient Diagnosis tests. I really felt like I ran out of gas on that day, so I’m praying and having faith that I passed both of those tests. BUT NONE OF THAT MATTERS BECAUSE I’M ON SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, this whole thing of comparing yourself to your classmates seems to always come back. I thought that I had completely gotten over comparing myself to my classmates, but when I heard that one of my close friends was ranked in the top 3 in our Physiology class, my heart started to beat fast, and I started to become discontent with my grades. I’m actually doing quite well in Physiology, and I’m very grateful for my success, but its so easy to forget how much you have been blessed when you look at others and what they have. Once I started to think about all the times God had blessed me just in the short time I had been in school, I felt so bad for looking at others and coveting their blessings. Each person is blessed with different gifts and talents, and its important to realize that you will never be like your classmates. Each person brings their own unique approach to medical school, and each person will perform differently in medical school. As a married man and someone overall who is interested in a variety of non-medicine things, I’m happy with where I am. I get to build websites, blog, play basketball, sing (in the shower 🙂 ), be a husband, and a medical student. I’m starting to become more comfortable with the kind of student that I am and I think it is important for every medical student to really understand who THEY are, so that they can be happy in their own successes and grateful for their individual blessings.

So yeah, I’m currently on spring break, so I plan to really relax which means I’ll blog again when school starts :). Take care!
