2nd year has started and I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck. This is our second week and it is twice the work we had last year and they give us less time to study. They require so much lab time outside of class that its hard to actually study. Part of that lab time for me today is performing my first pelvic exam on a lady who comes in (without pay I think) to help us learn. I’ll post more later on today.

Hi Jaysson and Brittaney:
I read your thoughts on your new year at school and found a devotional thought that I save for myself a few months ago and wanted to share with you.
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling. . .To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. (Jude 24(a)-25) (KJV)
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. (Eph. 3:20) (KJV)
It’s here. Are you ready? The year 2008(for you a challenging new school year) has arrived and there await us new joys to experience, new challenges to conquer triumphantly, and fresh power to pass every test. But if you are someone who is facing this new year with dread, please consider today’s meditations. The text says that God is able. We can stop and shout right there! But there’s more. The text goes much further and assures us what God is able to do. While one says He is able to keep us from falling, the other says He is able to do much more than we could ever ask or think. God is able to do things we have not even yet thought about. God’s ways are so much higher than our ways; He is able to put things together in ways we could not have even imagined.
YOU AND BRITTNEY WILL NOT FAIL!!! God has been orchestrating your life from day one until now. You have nothing to be afraid of!!!! Ask Him not only for good grades but superior grades and to help you organize your time and thinking God will do it. HE LOVES YOU BOTH. You are not there by accident. Love you much and praying for you both.

Every time you encounter a female patient with abdominal pain, you need to be sure that you can rule out pelvic pathology. When you perform those pelvic exams (under any circumstances), you are looking for pathology and nothing else. I can tell you that it was about my third year of residency when I became more confident in my pelvic exam rather than relying on others (the ER doc, the primary care doc) and their findings in the performance of this necessary exam.
When you are with your wife, you are NOT looking for pathology and you are not functioning in a professional role ! When you are with your patients you are providing professional care and nothing more. Still, I can vividly remember when I first walked into the Gross Anatomy lab and wondered if I could actually “cut” human flesh, so I understand your feelings. It took me about 15 seconds to realize that I was there to locate and identify structures and not to “cut” human flesh.
Learn to perform those pelvic exams well and put that skill in your toolbox that helps you to become a safe and confident surgeon/physician. It’s a process and you “wrap your head” around many new things. Just keep writing about them!
