So on Sunday I was at the National Medical Association (NMA) meeting in Las Vegas. The NMA was formed many years back when the AMA wasn’t allowing blacks doctors to join their group. It was truly amazing to see just a sea of black doctors roaming around greeting each other, laughing, and reminiscing about old times. It seemed like 85% of the doctors their either went to medical school at once of the HBCU medical schools or did their residency training at the HBCU medical school. Going to a majority medical school kind of made me feel left out but I quickly got over that and pursued the immense networking opportunity that was before me. I got a chance to talk to a bunch of surgeons who were chairs of their departments and they told me that the main weakness I had in my CV was a lack of research. So for this year getting on a research project is my main goal.
Unfortunately I had to fly back late Sunday night to continue my 3rd year rotations so I didn’t get a chance to meet everyone. However, back at the clinic today I actually discovered a midsystolic murmur in my patient that no one had heard before…it made me feel pretty jazzed for the rest of the day.
