This past Friday I had a pretty good day. I had an interview with Dr. Nyirady, the Dean of Admissions at Loma Linda SOM. It was basically our interview before our real one next semester. I went remarkably well, and he said in so many words that he doesn’t want me to apply to any other school but Loma Linda. Since where I go also depends on where Brittany gets in, I really couldn’t confirm that at all. But he really liked my stats, and more importantly, he loved the mission work I’m a part of. I’m really excited about that, but I know how much of a crapshoot medical admissions is, so I’m not getting my hopes up. School next year is going to be pretty crazy. The only way I and 3 other juniors were able to take Gross Anatomy was because we promised to be lab instructors for the class next year (something that the teacher rarely has, since its usually a class for seniors). Well, I guess because of the number of lab instructors they are going to have this upcoming year, the teacher expanded the class size from 27 to like 50!!! On top of that, our lab coordinator (the lady who runs the lab) is leaving to get her Ph.D in anatomy. It doesn’t look like they are bringing anybody else in, so its looking like it will be up to us 4 lab instructors to set the quizzes, tests, practicums, to help students dissect, and to dissect whatever students don’t get to. This is pretty exciting, because I would really be learning everything better because I’m teaching, but its going to be challenging too, since we will be also taking other challenging classes, and applying to medical school. Today I went to open lab for anatomy, and because it was a Sunday, the place was empty. I was in HEAVEN!!! I grabbed a chair, lined my 3 books on stands around me (Rohen’s Atlas, Netter’s Atlas, and Grant’s Dissector), took the brain out, and studied both the brain and the floor of the cranium. I’m really realizing how interesting the brain is. I identified most of the cranial nerves. Some I just couldn’t find because they were butchered as someone took the brain out (it wasn’t me I promise, lol). I’ve heard so many different way’s to memorize the cranial nerves, but this way works for me:

Good: Glossopharyngeal
Very: Vagus

I know there are better ones out there, but this works for now. I like it because some of the words actually tell what the nerve deals with. All this anatomy has me really excited about medical school, even though its really far away for me. Harvard University Grad came to speak to OMBA on Friday. They were very down to earth and nice, but just nothing would make me want to live there (except a full ride).
